I have held off long enough – I cannot wait any longer to say it; Christmas is coming!!!!! Yay!!!

My favourite time of the year is here: the build up to Christmas. I love the sense of anticipation, I love purchasing gifts for loved ones and visiting beautifully decorated shops, we play Christmas music earlier than most and we just adore this time.

We have reconciled the difference between the ‘world’s’ celebration and that of the birth of Christ by recognising that there are two celebrations occurring. We don’t fear it, we don’t confuse the two but we have drawn a conclusion that we feel content with.

Firstly, we want to celebrate the birth of Christ our Saviour. We are not told to in scripture but we are also not told to celebrate birthdays, clean our teeth, take children to school, or take up sports BUT we have liberty to do so. All things to the glory of God.

Secondly, we recognise that the Santa season is a wonderful opportunity to share the gospel. When do we benefit from such an opportunity comparable to this season?

If the season is Christ- centred then it is good in God’s sight.

We love to show hospitality – 1 Peter 4 v 9

Show hospitality to one another without grumbling.

We love to share the gospel –

At no other time of the year do people everywhere share the gospel through song across our tv’s, in shopping centre’s and in our villages!

Hark the Herald Angel Sing announces:

Long lay the world
in sin and error pining.
Till he appeared
And the soul felt its worth.

We are commemorating our Saviour’s birth! There is nothing in 25th December of itself, it merely serves as a reminder to remember that our awesome God came as flesh and dwelt with us, now that is worthy of celebration!

A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees!
Oh, hear the angel voices!
Oh night, divine!
Oh night when Christ was born.

While families are drawn near, hearts softened it is a perfect opportunity to read the scriptures. Even those who have no faith are willing to listen to scripture at this time of year…

May we use every opportunity to make known our Saviour, we are careful not to throw out ‘The Baby’ with the bath water!

We wouldn’t want to be a stumbling block to others who feel differently so we wouldn’t be over – zealous about Christmas in the company of those who find it difficult to reconcile baubles, tinsel and turkey to the the gospel.

I will be writing more in the coming days about our family traditions, recipes and other Christmas items in the coming days. I will also be writing an advent bible study.
